Creating Sound for the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Trailer

When Blackscreen Productions reached out to us for the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree trailer, we were pumped! This wasn’t just another project; it was a chance to work on something that fans have been buzzing about. We knew how important it was to capture the right vibe, so we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Wanna see how we made their vision come true? Here’s how we tackled the project!

The Sound Design

Our first step was diving into the sound design. We wanted to create an immersive atmosphere that captured the essence of the game. To do that, we gathered an array of sounds, for example in the scene where the flying car lands we layered a combination of ethereal futuristic ‘otherworldly’ sound effects with more real and mechanical sounds to create a feeling of realism. And each sword sound was meticulously layered to literally cut through the mix and create a dynamic, punchy weapon. The goal was to pull the audience into the action and keep them on the edge of their seats.

We had fun diving into sound design. It’s amazing how many sounds are out there just waiting to be discovered. Sometimes, you just have to get a little creative and playful to find what fits. The process is all about exploring and experimenting to capture the right vibe that makes everything pop!

The Mixing Process

Once we had our sounds nailed down, it was time for some mixing. This is where everything comes together. We carefully balanced sound effects, dialogue, and music to ensure they flowed seamlessly. Our aim was to build suspense during the quieter moments while delivering explosive sound effects during the action scenes.

There’s a thrill in hearing the final cut and knowing we’ve created something unique that will resonate with the audience.

Since this content is so rich in sound design it can be difficult to ensure all the layers don’t clash and sound like one big noise. Every layer has to be thought about with a strict hierarchy in mind to tell the story sonically. Then once music is added it can throw the balance off again so we dip and boost different moments throughout and alter the sonic hierarchy depending on where the story needs to go. In the end it’s a harmonious balance that peaks and troughs throughout and breaths so the audio perfectly elevates the story
